PUNE: Activism pays. So does a verticalisation of programming. And if the channel is in the local language, so much the better.
CNBC TV 18's Hindi channel, Awaz, positioned as a consumer activist channel, has proved that, encouraging it to go 'vernacular' by the last quarter of this fiscal. It will start off with Gujarati and Tamil and then, in the second round, introduce a Marathi channel.
This will be preceded by the launch of the Awaz Consumer Forum, to be launched by the first week of August, and by the 'Aap ki Awaz' programmes.

While film personality and Rajya Sabha MP, Shabana Azmi, will go on air in the first week of July, Farooque Shaikh's programme will be telecast later.
With its new English news channel to be launched in four months from now, the business only channel will add to its bouquet.
"During 04-05, we have become bigger, terms of viewership, than NDTV 24x7, prompting the launch of 'Awaz' the Hindi channel," Ajay Chacko, head, marketing, CNBC TV 18, said. "The trend is that business television is bigger than English news," he added.
Explaining the celeb-hosted programmes, Mr Chacko said while Ms Azmi would focus on societal issues, Mr Shaikh would take up individual, specific cases. Activism, on television, he said, has not been attempted anywhere, which they are undertaking.

"Awaz Consumer Forum will go beyond investor camps. They will feature representatives from consumer rights organisations, the Regulator, manufacturers or service providers and the media," Ajay Chacko, head, marketing,CNBC TV-
18, said.
While Pune is its fastest growing market in vierwership terms, closing in on Bangalore and Ahmedabad, it currently has about 1.5 lakh viewers, taking to 6th or 7th position, nationally. Mr Chacko added that the markets they are targeting for growth, besides Pune, are Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ludhiana, Kanpur, Coimbatore and Kochi. In India, it is a channel available in 2 crore households.
